Sustainability and the Environment

Energy and climate issues are closely linked to sustainable development as described by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the German government's national sustainability goals. Sustainability generally combines the three pillars of environment, economy and social development. Accordingly, the energy transition or adaptation to climate change must consider issues relating to environmental and sustainability impacts just as much as impacts on economic and social development.

From this holistic perspective, we also work on projects and research questions that go beyond energy and climate issues. This may involve the identification of environmental data and indicators, the extension of model analyses to include other environmental areas such as resources, other air pollutants, water, land use or waste, or the consideration of all sustainability indicators. The question of how to create green jobs also goes beyond looking at energy and climate. This is because too narrow analysis can lead to environmental problems merely being shifted between different sectors or opportunities not being thought of together. The bioeconomy lies at the interface of energy and resource use and is also being worked on in close cooperation with the "Global Developments and Resources" area.
