Number of people in need of care rises significantly again in 2024

Our figure of the month 06/2026

28.05.2026

The latest figures from the business statistics of the long-term care insurance funds and private mandatory long-term care insurance show that in 2024, around 6.02 million people in Germany require care—a substantial increase compared to previous years. This category includes all individuals receiving benefits from social long-term care insurance or private mandatory long-term care insurance. The sharp rise exceeds demographic expectations and continues to reflect the impact of the expanded definition of care dependency introduced on January 1, 2017, which has led to more people being classified as in need of care than before.

A decade ago, the number of people requiring care stood at just 2.74 million. Over the past ten years, Germany has seen more than a doubling of care dependency (+119% since 2014, see figure). In the preceding decade, by contrast, the increase was relatively modest at 30%. This development is primarily driven by the growing number of people receiving home-based care, which has surged by 163% since 2014. Currently, 86% of all care-dependent individuals are cared for at home, while 0.8 million (14%) receive institutional care in nursing homes. The ratio of home-based to institutional care now stands at roughly 6:1, compared to 2.5:1 ten years ago.
