Labor demand and labor supply along the "hydrogen" value chain

Hydrogen and the associated use of synthetic energy sources will play a key role in achieving climate targets. As so-called "game changer", hydrogen technologies will significantly simplify the energy transition and also make it more affordable. Exploiting these potential uses and the resulting savings in CO2 emissions will require extensive research and development work as well as investments and restructuring of industrial processes. In the process, a hydrogen economy will be established with the production, transport and use of green hydrogen. This will have far-reaching consequences for labor market needs and thus for the education and training system in Germany. In order to ensure that the implementation of the National Hydrogen Strategy is not slowed down by shortages of skilled workers, it is necessary to identify at an early stage which professions, qualifications and skills will be needed in the future. It is also necessary to evaluate whether the current development path in the education system can cover these future needs.
