Impacts of climate change, climate mitigation and climate adaptation on the macroeconomic development in Germany

As part of this project commissioned by the BMWK, GWS and Prognos analysed the effects of climate change and the measures associated with climate protection and adaptation on selected economic indicators such as GDP, employment and production potential in Germany for the first time. The necessary investments in climate mitigation and adaptation have also been quantified. They could amount to up to an additional 80 billion euros per year by 2045. The costs of global warming that can be quantified in economic terms will rise sharply for Germany in the future. Some costs, such as in the health sector, have so far only been taken into account to a limited extent. It is therefore all the more important that climate change does not continue to increase, but that the goal of climate neutrality is pursued stringently and climate mitigation measures are implemented. Especially as investments in climate mitigation have a positive effect on value added. It is also important to reduce the consequences of unavoidable climate change with suitable adaptation measures. Climate mitigation and adaptation reduce the costs of the climate crisis.

Reports on the results of the project have also been published in two issues of Schlaglichter der Wirtschaftspolitik:
